Poster Research

For our production, we had been set the task of creating our own film poster. In order to do this, we decided to research into film posters of the same genre as ours, which is romantic drama, and I decided to focus on the film posters for the films Titanic, Remember Me and Romeo and Juliet. I found that for all of these posters, the similarity which they all share is the fact that they all use an image of the two lovers in the film together to portray the romance which the film will be about.

For the film poster for Titanic, the main image is of the two lovers with the male character wrapping his arms around the female character. This shows the romance side to the film as the audience can instantly tell they are in love and shows that these two characters are the two main protagonists and the film will be focused on them. There is also an image of the boat Titanic underneath the image of the two protagonists and the audience are able to gather that the film is a fictionalized account of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Due to the image of the boat, the audience will know that there will be some kind of tragedy in the film and also because of the two protagonists' expressions being very serious, which adds to the drama side. The title of the film has been overlapped on the image of the boat and is used in a simple, white font against the dark colour of the boat. These two colours contrast together and therefore stand out which makes it more likely that the audience will look at the poster as it is eye catching.

For the film poster for Remember Me, again there is a central image of the two lovers in the film close together and again, shows that they are the two protagonists, which shows the romantic side to the film. The poster is in black and white which is instantly eye catching as it stands out. The two lovers in the film both have connections with family deaths, as the male character's brother has committed suicide and the female character's mother has been murdered, and so with the title of the film being used in red, this could possibly signify blood/danger due to their deaths, which shows the drama side to the film. 

The film poster for Romeo and Juliet is quite different when compared to the previous two. This poster doesn't use one main image of the two protagonists but instead uses two small images at the top of the poster and another two images used underneath of both of the protagonists (with one of these including another character from the film). With each of these images, a single word has been placed on each image with the use of an ampersand in between the two images at the top and underneath so the poster reads like 'hope and despair', 'tragedy and love' and the last image being slightly larger than the previous ones showing the two lovers but in a sort of split screen so the poster finally reads as 'Romeo and Juliet'. The font colour for the captions is in white, which contrasts against the dark images, instantly standing out. There is also the use of red font, similarly to Remember Me, which again could possibly indicate blood/danger as both of the protagonists die in the film.
