Editing Information

During the editing process, we had to decide what kinds of transitions and effects we were going to use which would fit within our chosen genre of romance/drama for our film.The main edit our production consists of includes fade in/fade out and a time passing sequence, this is to show the couple's relationship as it progresses along with Molly's disease as that continues to grow and take over her life, despite her efforts to stay positive and be happy with Alfie.
When filming this production, many of the scenes were shot outside and in busy areas, this as a result caused issues in editing our production, as the weather such as the sun moving behind clouds, the wind blowing and in some cases snow falling became an in-continuity piece that in places had to be edited to ensure our film was continuous. Similar to this the noisy areas were a problem to shoot as many of the dialogue spoken often wouldn't be heard on the camera for example busy roads could be heard in the background, the wind blowing caused disruptions and busy areas such as the cafe scene were loud and noisy, therefore we needed to edit out these interruptions to ensure we could hear what the characters were saying.
The time passing sequence in our production was also an issue we had to correct in order to show a passage of time continuously, in order to show the couples relationship moving forward, we had to film in a range of weather conditions that would display a passage of months, as a result filming these scenes became an issue as we had to spend a lot of time editing the different weather conditions together to correctly portray a significant amount of time passing from when the couple meet, have there first date and when they are in love.
We decided to edit our production in this way to express the realistic and romantic genre of the film, depsite editing difficulties.

Research Into Soundtrack - Opening Music

For our film, we decided that we needed some opening music as the title credits played to introduce the film. I researched into films of the same genre as ours and came across several different tracks which are played at the beginning of each film.

I decided to look at the opening music to the film A Walk To Remember. The song used is Cannonball by The Breeders, which is an alternative rock/pop song. The use of an upbeat, uptempo modern song like this is used to show the film is about youths/teenagers and this song portrays this well. It also establishes the film well and shows how happy the characters are at the beginning of the film.

For the film, Letters To Juliet, the opening music is the song You Got Me by Colbie Caillat. It is a pop/soft rock song and whilst it does sound slightly romantic, as the song kicks in it sounds slightly more upbeat, showing the happiness at the beginning of the film and the youthfulness it portrays.

Research Into Soundtrack - Ending/Dying Scenes

After researching a range of romantic/drama films, the soundtrack of each is that of a ballad. For the dying scenes in our production using this type of genre of music would appeal to the audience as the music sounds upsetting and therefore reflects the dramatic nature of the scenes. Examples of ballads that are used in other romantic/drama productions include 'Des'ree - Kissing You' used for the film Romeo and Juliet, 'Snow Patrol - Set Fire To The Third Bar' used for the film Dear John, and 'Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On' used for the film Titanic.

Despite these films having completely different story lines they all have a strong ballad to express the romance/dramatic nature of the film and are used to generate a sense of sadness and upset amongst the audience.

Soundtrack Research

Our film contains a time passage sequence like the one in the film below 'The Last Song'. This is the song that plays during the sequence in this film. It is a powerful love ballad. I found during sequences majority of films use similar songs to create a powerful heart twisting feeling. Film such as Dirty Dancing with 'the time of my life' and Footloose with 'I need a hero' all pop songs which start and build up to a crescendo of music and emotion. The song 'when i look at you' below starts slowly like the two characters romance then builds as their love does. The words describe the boy as home as 'when she can't find her way home anymore, thats when i look at you' shows. 

I think in order for our time passing sequence to be moving and romantic we should consider using similar genre music as the soundtrack for this part. 

Potential Film Posters

This is the final film poster completed and edited. I have used a cartoon like font to blend with the quirky romantic feel of our film. The title is the largest writing on the screen to draw the eye to it first. I have used quotes above of others opinions to give the viewer an idea of the emotions the film will provoke. The final thing i added to the photo was the background image. At first it looks whimsical and romantic but when looked at closely you are able to see they are in fact tablets. I have only made the background image 20% opacity to represent the underlying secret the character molly has as well as the relevance to the title.

I also created this portrait film poster with the other photo we had using the same framework, font and background however i used a longer quote. This could possible be found on the pages of a magazine as a pose to outside the cinema like the one above. Although this poster has different uses i prefer the one above as the above photograph shows the characters faces and more about their relationship.
