Research Into Genre

We have decided that our film will be a drama film as we all very much enjoy drama films and feel that we will be able to create a successful, effective drama film. It also slightly falls into the romantic drama category as it focuses on a male and female character who fall in love, however the story ends as a tragedy.

Drama films tend to be serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations which portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves or forces of nature and who are dealing with emotional themes. A dramatic film shows human beings at their best, their worst and everything in between. Drama films are probably the largest film genre because they include a broad spectrum of films such as romantic dramas, sport films, period dramas, comedy dramas, courtroom dramas and crime.

Dramatic films tend to include themes such as infidelity, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, drug addiction, poverty, political unrest, alcoholism, sexuality, mental illness, violence against women and many others. Dramatic films which have used some of these subjects have successfully drawn attention to the issues by taking advantage of the topical interest of the subject. Dramas tend to have tragic or painful resolutions and concern the survival of some tragic crisis, like the death of a family member or a divorce.

Romantic drama explores the complex side of love. The plot usually revolves around an obstacle which prevents love between two people. Music is often employed to indicate the emotional mood, creating an atmosphere of greater insulation for the couple. The conclusion of a romantic drama typically does not indicate whether a marriage will occur. Some examples of romantic drama films are Letters To Juliet (2010), A Walk To Remember (2002), The Notebook (2004) and Romeo and Juliet.
