A short film of course does not have a long run time, so in order for it to be successful, the plot needs to be quick , as well as being effective. Ten minutes is the normal duration of a short film; this gives enough time to tell a good story and hold the audience's attention, without them getting bored.
The theme is crucial, if you look at short films that have won prizes in the past, they all are of a theme that everyone can relate to. So it wouldn't be much good making a film based on someone having a pet cat, as not everyone is a fan of cats. This would perhaps be successful if it were a full length film, but as you only have up to ten minutes to show, it isn't going to pull on anyone's heart strings.
The characters are very important. After all, they are the ones that are going to be transferring your story to your viewers. It isn't a very good idea to introduce a lot of characters to the viewers as there is too little time to get to know them all. Up to 4 is recommended.
